      Particulate matter is a collection of small particles that are so small that they cannot be seen with the naked eye. Some particles are harmless, such as sea salt, but other particles such as traffic emissions and wood smoke are actually harmful to your health. A lot of attention is paid on what people eat and drink. Is it important to also think about the air you inhale? When viewed in perspective – one adult consumes 1 kg of food each day, 2 litres of drink and almost 11.000 litres of air – air is more important than one initially would think.

      How dangerous is particulate matter and where does this depend on?
      How hazardous a particle is, depends on the composition and size of the particle. The smaller the particle, the deeper it can penetrate into the body. Ultrafine dust, for example, is so small that it easily passes through the lung vesicles into the blood and then is transported throughout the body.       The health damage caused by particulate matter exposure depends on the concentration to which one is exposed to and the duration of exposure. In addition, each body responds to particulate matter differently.

      Exposure to particulate matter is harmful – always
      Researchers indicate that exposure to particulate matter, in any concentration, is harmful to health. The health risks range from a mild cough to cardiovascular disease, cancer and even premature death. See the image below for indicated health risks of particulate matter.

      How can I reduce my particulate matter intake?
      The particulate matter intake can be reduced by avoiding or reducing high particulate matter concentrations. When you are outside, avoid busy roads and go for quiet roads.
